Grade Nine ELA

The grade 9 simile poem assignment will be due on Monday, September 14.

Here are the criteria:
Simile Poem Assignment
Steps:
1. Create a concept map of things that you like, despise, annoy you, make you smile, or make you want to tear your head out. Be creative as possible, as some of the best poems come from the most seemingly outlandish ideas. DO NOT WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING INVOLVING SPECIFIC PEOPLE!
2. Select one particular idea. Refine it. Break it down. From this idea, start comparing this idea to other things. Again, get creative! You are to list at least TEN similes.
3. Arrange these similes into a poem (again, your poem must include at least ten similes). Play around with their order until it sounds as good as it can. Remember that part of your mark will include your brainstorming.
4. Have fun with the written copy of the poem. If you are writing a poem about how much you hate getting out of bed, for example, you could write it out on an old pillow case.
5. Present the poem to the class orally. Part of your grade will be assessed based on how well you present the poem, so PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE!!!!

DUE DATE (WRITTEN AND ORAL): Monday, September 14, 2009.

Your grade will be determined as follows:
Written copy: spelling, format, creativity: /3
Written presentation: Legibility, creativity: /5
Creativity of topic: /2
Creativity of similes: /5
TOTAL: /15

Oral Presentation: inflection, speed, volume: TOTAL: /5
